A specialty adapted housing direct loan, or SAH, is administered through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans that have disabilities due to military service may be entitled to a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs for the purpose of constructing an adapted dwelling or modifying an existing residence to meet any special needs. To goal of the specialty adapted housing direct loan is to provide a barrier-free living environment which affords disabled veterans a level of independent living they may not enjoy otherwise.
There are also two types of grants administered by Veterans Affairs that are available to assist severely disabled veterans in adapting housing to their special needs. The first is available to disabled veterans who are entitled to a wheelchair accessible home adapted to their needs. The second is available to veterans who are entitled to adaptation because of blindness in both eyes with 5/200 visual acuity or less, or the anatomical loss of both hands.
Who it's for
Specially adapted housing direct loans are for veterans who have service-related disabilities and require adaptations to their dwellings in order to live comfortably and independently. Acceptable uses of specially adapted housing direct loans include building a new accessible dwelling or modifying an existing residence. Grants are available to veterans who need to make their home wheelchair accessible and to veterans who are blind in both eyes or who have lost the anatomical use of both hands.
What you need to do to apply
In order to obtain a specially adapted housing loan or grant, contact the Veterans Affairs office nearest to you. For grants in particular, applicants will need to acquire the 26-4555 Veterans Application in acquiring a specially adapted housing or special home adaptation grant. The loan will need to be submitted to a Veterans Affairs regional loan center.
