The Western Union Prepaid MasterCard is a stored value card issued by BankFIRST. The card is aimed at those who have limited or poor credit and do not qualify for an unsecured credit card. It provides a convenient way of making purchases or withdrawing cash at an ATM or wherever MasterCard is accepted.
Customers make payments to the card in advance. Payments can be set up regularly from a paycheck or at Western Union locations (these locations charge a fee). It should be noted that there is a limit to the amount of funds that can be loaded to the card each month.
The card carries a low activation fee and monthly maintenance fee. The monthly fee will be waived for each month following a direct deposit to the card account. Therefore, those who direct deposit funds will only pay the initial activation fee. However, it should be noted that unlike many other stored value cards, this card does not report account activity to credit bureaus and would not appeal to those who wish to build up their credit rating in this way.
